Poreslide is a thin porous ceramic slide that has nano- or micro- porous structure.

Key Feature: The sizes of nano-pores in Poreslides are comparable to the dimensions of the molecules, therefore the molecules can be trapped or immobilised in the porous structure at the surface of the Poreslides. Different pore sizes can accommodate different chemical species and bio-species for various applications.

Over the last five years, as a result of rapid development in nanotechnology, HP Technical Ceramics have developed a series of porous ceramic thin sheets that have narrow pore size distributions, e.g. from 15 to 40 nm. The Poreslides, which are essentially novel nano ceramic materials, provide simple and new ways for chemical processes. For example, It has been demonstrated that, when a extremely small amount of metal ions is immobilised in a form of 10 micron wide track, the bacteria of a kind like it so much that they occupied the track completely. Whereas on a similar track nearby that was made by immobilising another metal ion (e.g. zinc), there was completely free of the bacteria. In fact, if a nano-track of a chemical species is formed on it, it probably allows the bacteria or even virus to form nano-track.

Functions: The Poreslides meet the requirements of chemistry where one or more of the following functions are needed:

         Fixing or immobilising chemicals on to a reaction base.

         Storing a wet chemical in a solid surface with high surface area.

         The porous structure increases the surface areas by many folds, which can enhance a chemical reaction.

         The high surface area enhances the expression of reaction result.

         The Poreslides containing chemicals can be conveniently exposed in a reacting gas or immersed in a reacting solution for a chemical process.

         Like a normal glass slide, the Poreslide can be examined with a microscope, X-ray and scanning electron microscope.

          For certain application, expression of a chemical process may be detected as an optical (such as florescence) or magnetic signal.

         Using different pore sizes to trap different chemical species, including protein purification.

         Different Poreslides have different surface structures that chemical species travel through capillary action with different speeds. One can establish his own surface chromatography for a specific application.

General Properties:

         Poreslides are made of SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2 and other inert oxides.

         Various pore size ranges to suit different applications (see Table).

         Interconnected pore structure.

         High surface area (up to 300 m2/g).

         Interconnected pores can be regionalized, so that the chemical immobilised in one region is not defused into other regions that may contain different chemicals for other functions.

         Narrow pore size distribution.

         The porous ceramic membrane structure is chemically durable, resistant in acid and alkaline conditions. 

         The porous structure is stable to high temperature up to 1000oC, for easy cleaning and sterilisation.

         Both the porous structures and geometry of the Poreslides can be customised to suit specific applications.
